Press Release on Luck Draws

08.02.2003

Gambling has started in Pakistan under the disguise of lucky draws and should be stopped immediately, Mr. Nadim Yousaf, Chief Organizer of the Pakistan Social Justice Group has demanded from the government. Since ARY started program “Gold Quiz” and it has begun to distribute one kilo gold to the callers through lucky draw, many other companies have also started to ask people to ring to their 0900 telephone number in order to win cars and other expensive prizes. It is no need to mention that calling on 0900 number means paying many folds charges compare to a normal local call. Undoubtedly calling to these numbers is similar to playing in Casino on machines.

Mr. Yousaf is astonished that the government has neither taken any action against such advertisements, which are promoting gambling in the country. He fears that if this is not stopped other types of the gambling games such as ‘scratch cards’ will soon be started in the country in a very near future. Mr. Yousaf stresses to the politicians that they should raise the issue inside and outside of the parliament. He added, “if such lucky draw schemes are not stopped, poor will suffer.” Mr. Yousaf appeals to the nation that they should no participate in these lucky draw gimmicks to discourage them.
