This article is a response to the article “corporate donkeys” published in the daily dawn on 14 December 2003. Hardworking people were attributed as donkeys in the above mentioned article. Though the script is humorous but the discreet impact of it might stimulate negative work ethics and encourage hardworking employees to adopt a foxy behavior. It may be appropriate to argue that discrete messages sometimes carry reverse effects. Thus my apprehensions after reading the corporate donkeys are that people might despise donkey’s attitude and idealize foxy work ethics. As discussed later in this article, we need more of donkey behavior than foxy to develop this country. To counter the effects of the above article, characteristics of corporate foxes are indiscreetly highlighted here.
Who are corporate foxes?
Corporate foxes demonstrate cunning and shrewd behavior. They make lies with ease and term them as communication or negotiation skills. Consequently, they rise on the ladder of hierarchy faster. In contrast to donkeys, foxes do not do much from start till end of the day except showing their negotiation and socialization skills. However, they have high expectations of high monetary reward without being productive. They do not mind to go an extra mile to make happy their bosses and influential people. Foxy behavior is in fact analogous to treacherous behavior. Check it out through the test given below whether or not you fall in the category of corporate foxes.
Self-Diagnose of Fox Behavior (SDFB)
If your answer is YES to 5 of the above points, you are a FOX. The higher marks you obtain, the bigger FOX you are. If you are a fox, you are neither sincere to your organization nor to this nation. You should reconsider your attitude and actions to be a productive team player and a member of this state. The best suggestion for you is to focus on your work instead of busy in negative activities as indicated above.
What Donkeys should do?
The donkeys should redefine their roles without following the footsteps of foxes, if they are desirous of seeing this nation develop. Below are given some tips to donkeys to correct the current situation, which is not only benefiting for the donkeys but also for the system:
-Corporate Donkeys should reveal and discuss behavior of foxes publicly. -Refuse to share Corporate Foxes load of work. -The Donkey Peer must report actions of corporate Foxes to the superiors informally or formally. -Donkeys should learn to stand for their rights without adopting foxes’ behavior. -If you are Corporate Donkey and heading the organization/department you should discourage Corporate Foxes.
Who is better: Corporate Foxes or Donkeys?
Analyzing efficiency of organizations in Pakistan, it might not be wrong to argue that it has been declining because corporate donkeys are becoming a scarce resource day by day in this country. If there is some level of efficiency is left in the country it is by virtues of corporate donkeys; otherwise organizations, institutions and society are full of foxes. The truth is that we cannot afford more foxes in Pakistani organizations and institutions. If we had discouraged increase of corporate foxes the country would have not reached to this miserable state. Our survival and progress as a nation is hidden in ignoring foxes and promoting donkeys. It is only corporate donkeys can improve efficiency and productivity. Organizations and institutions can correct corporate foxes’ behavior by encouraging rule-orientation and evenly distributing work load among employees, and discouraging unnecessary socialization and networking. In conclusion, Pakistan needs more donkeys than foxes to be a progressive and egalitarian state.
